Akira: Hmmmmm that's weird. I used my personal school e-mail address (which isn't .edu) I don't remember too much about signing up because I did it back in August, all I remember was saying what program I was on and then they had to verify that I was actually an alum and that was it.

Hey Olivia, I tried registering and it said my email address wasn't a recognized organization. Did you use your personal email address??

Okay, so I just want to relay how awesome being an alum of this program is. Once your an alum, you're technically a state alum and you can become a member of a website called Joint Language University and they have special subscriptions and one of them is Rosetta Stone so you can get it for free. There are only a certain number of subscriptions so you have to go on the waiting list, but I finally got one last week! It's so awesome and every time you log on, you can choose what language you want to do so I've going between Turkish and Korean (It's nice to keep up my Turkish because there aren't too many resources and then further my Korean.)

Thanks Kathy! I'm going to look into it! I'm 18 as of Oct 21 2011, so I may be too old..and I'm not in the top 25% at my high school (average 3.0 GPA)...but I have other things going for me so I may try this anyway just to say I tried :))

Is it alright if I give a shout out to the Ben Franklin Summer Institute? =) It was easily the best summer of my life, and that was two years ago! This really goes for any student who's interested in South/Central Asian cultures, or wants to share American culture with other students! If your NSLI-Y plans keeps you free for the summer, consider BFSIA!

The Benjamin Franklin Summer Institute with South and Central Asia (BFSI) will be held June 20 – July 17, 2012 for forty-five teenagers ages 16-18 from India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the United States at George Mason University Fairfax campus. There's 10 scholarships for 10 American students, which pays for food, transport and accommodation! Consider those countries, who else can say they've made friends from Central Asia? Debated Central Asian politics, celebrated 4th of July with cookout, baseball and henna? Visited the UN, DC and Phily with awesome friends? Held talks about interfaith understanding and so on?

I dearly miss BFSIA, and I know there's got to be someone here who will be interested or know someone interested this summer! More Info: http://bfsia.wordpress.com/u-s-student-application/
