You might be far along with Chinese already but generally the process for teaching is that I got was....
tones + pinyin intro + basic words
daily chinese basic Q & A
more basic vocabulary, more pronunciation
more sentence formation, question words
Repeat of all of the above
Start with simplified characters (in Shanghai)
If you are trying to study before you leave, I would focus on basic Q&A (how do i get here, how do i say this...) and then pick up more as you go.
