Hello!
International Education Week is November 14-18, 2011! There are many events being held around the world "to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide." There are also materials offered for free to encourage students to learn about different cultures from each other. I plan on using the Global IQ quiz with my students and participating in the Flat Stanley project. If you want to know how to get your students involved, or would like to submit your event, please go to http://www.iew.state.gov/index.cfm.
How will you celebrate International Education Week? Post your responses in this forum!
Warm regards,
Renee

The project is based on the book, and students print out the image of Flat Stanley or Flat Stella from the IEW site listed above and take a picture with the image at their school or local landmarks. The the photo is uploaded to the IEW website to show all of the places Flat Stanley or Flat Stella have visited around the world. It's a great way for students to connect and exchange a snapshot of their local environment, institutions, and culture with each other.

Renee

the children's book I just published was influenced by Flat Stanley (silly situations like his, a boy with 2 left feet, and a girl with her head on backwards!), and it is one of my favorities, and I am so grateful to the author for writing it!! - Juanita

That's a good question. It would be interesting to find out the countries that have been visited. Congratulations on your new book! Where would we be able to find it?

Renee
Permalink Reply by Dilian Xiomara Ortìz Sabillòn on November 16, 2011 at 12:11am Hello Teachers !!
I also love Flat Stanley... I`m an English , dance and theater teacher at Centro Cultural Sampedrano, and thanks to the U.S. embassy we presented the short play : " Flat Stanley " . As part of their social work my art students presented it at our institution`s public library, and several children from public schools were invited. Children had fun at the same time that were learning a good life lesson !! and for me it felt really good to look at my students performing in front of such curious and dynamic audience. " KIDS "...... so I encourage you to use this faboulous story in your English classes.
OPTIONS:
1. STUDENTS CAN ROLE PLAY IT.
2. STUDENTS CAN CREATE A LETTER TO STANLEY TO MAKE HIM FEEL LETTER.
3. A STUDENT ( WITH PREVIOUS APPROVAL FROM TEACHER ) WILL BECOME STANLEY. AND THE REST CAN ASK QUESTIONS TO HIM.
4. THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THE CLASS....( PRACTICED WITH TEACHER )
5. STUDENTS CAN WRITE A SONG ABOUT STANLEY.
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES WE CAN CREATE TO MAKE OUR STUDENTS ENJOY THEIR LEARNING PROCESS !!!

I enjoyed reading your post about students' participation in Flat Stanley and how they inspired children to learn while having fun! I agree with Juanita; your lesson ideas are great and offer an easy way for the family to become involved in the project as well. You are an amazing educator! Thank you for sharing with us! Please share more ideas with us soon! :)
