The deadline for the contest is May 1, 2012. Submissions should be approximately 500 words and be about one of the following topics:

The mission of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is to foster mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Why would you recommend that students in your field of study learn a critical language?

How do you currently use your target language in your career and/or how do you intend to do so in the future?

The CLS Program is pleased to announce that we have concluded the 2012 selection process. All applicants have been notified of their final decision status. We would like to congratulate all 2012 finalists and alternates – and applaud all CLS Program applicants for their dedication to studying a critical language! With over 5,200 applicants received, the competition was intense and we hope that all applicants who were not selected will consider applying again in the future.
