Hi everyone,

Just so you know, the CBYX application deadline has been extended by several organizations:

AFS: December 30, 2010

ASSE: January 11, 2011

AYUSA: January 7, 2011

CIEE: tbd

Good luck if you are planning to apply!

Oh great, thank you!!

And for the vocational one, I haven't done much research on it yet, but I don't have to go to a vocational high school to apply, right?

Katy: As long as you meet the requirements for both, go for it. A friend of mine who's in Germany with me did that last year. She had to do both interviews on the same day, which made it a long one, but otherwise it should be no problem. (:

If I am a high school senior, can I apply to the high school exchange program and the vocational program to increase my chances for going?

Martin - no, this particular program is not international because it serves only U.S. and German participants.

If you're talking about the high school program, it depends a lot on region. Each organization grants fifty scholarships, for a total of two hundred fifty. If you're applying from the northeast (AFS), you'll probably be one of about one hundred fifty applicants for the fifty spots, but it varies.

From my experience, it depends on the group. The CBYX High School has a lot more applicants, but they also have more organizations (AFS, YFU, etc.) to support them. From what I heard, there were about 150 High School participants in my year. The program that I did in 2009 - 2010 is the CBYX Vocational Program and that probably has less applicants, but I've heard it's growing every year. There are 75 semi-finalists who get interviews and 25 finalists who go to Germany. It's supported by Open Door International and it's a really, really great program with amazing people. I think it's more personalized than the High School program and taking a gap year is always a good idea.

Does anyone know how many people apply for this scholarship each year? Thanks.
