hi,

My experience with CBYX was nothing but great. The program gives you lots of opportunities to meet new people, travel, and learn all about Germany and the political side of the country. Your assigned member of the Bundestag will (sometimes but not always) contact you, and if they do, you get the chance to meet with them. My representative invited me several times to his office, to a local meeting of his party, the CDU, and even to sit in on a meeting of the province's parliament. It all depends on who you get, though, on whether they'll extend a hand to you, or never contact you at all. With AFS we had a midstay camp in Bad Honnef, near Cologne and Bonn, and went on field trips to important areas of those cities, to museums, and on many tours. At the end-of-stay camp in Berlin, we met the CBers from other organizations for one day, and on e other days, talked about leaving and saying goodbye, and were given lots of free time to explore the city on our own.

I applied through AFS, so I can't say what the competition with AYUSA is like, but during my year, for the 50 scholarship spots, only about 76 people sent in applications, so the chances were very high of getting it. However, I think that was just a fluke, and it's normally more difficult to receive. Just make sure you include all your activities and achievements on your application, get everything done on time (that's the big one!), and if you get called in for an interview, be yourself above all. They're looking for unique individuals from diverse backgrounds to represent the US abroad, so whatever you can do to make yourself stand out as not just being another face in the crowd, do it. ;) Hope it helps!
